Sing Out! The Power of the Protest Song at the clover room

DOORS: 6:30pm
SHOW: 7:30pm
TICKETS: $35

From the coal mines to the picket lines, protest songs have served to highlight injustice, point the way out of the darkness and provide the courage to keep marching forward. As Pete Seeger says, “a good song reminds us what we are fighting for.”

Many area and regional musicians are generously giving their time to share a selection of songs from the deep traditions of protest music. It will be an evening of catchy and cathartic music with opportunities for community sing-alongs!

Funds raised will support MI Book Club and the work they do, providing volunteers and donations to local organizations. Specific beneficiaries include Indivisible Greater Kalamazoo and groups that provide systemic advocacy to advance the rights of low-income immigrants and their families.

MI Book Club formed to explore the lessons of the book “On Tyranny,” and has evolved to provide monthly training and educational sessions, offer members mutual aid and support local organizations and causes.

Meet the Artists:

In It Together String Band brings together bandmates from several old-time string bands in Michigan and Indiana, including the “Rinktum Ramblers” and “Waterbound” with Bev Smith and Aaron Kates on fiddle, Jim Horton on guitar, Carol Steiner on vocals, Linda Gail Havens on bass, and Howard Steiner on banjo.

Vox Elders brings together former members of several great Chicago bands: the Volo Bogtrotters, a revered old-time string band, as well as WAZO County Warblers, the Teflons, and the Wabi Sabi Barn Dance Band. Paul Tyler plays fiddle, Gail Tyler plays ukulele, Fred Campeau plays guitar, and Mitch Campeau plays bass.

Mechele Peters is a Kalamazoo-based singer with a penchant for describing the human condition.

Darcy Wilkin grew up surrounded by music, attending bluegrass festivals and coffee house concerts with her family. Her house was a regular stopover for touring musicians, where her folks would host jam sessions and parties where Darcy stayed up way too late, absorbing the music around her. She considers this unique upbringing a gift, as it led to her own musical path. She co-founded the Corn Fed Girls in 1997 and is an active solo performer. She released her debut solo album, Bristol, produced by Joe Newberry, in 2020. Darcy returned to the studio this past summer, once again working with musician and producer Newberry. Showcasing Wilkin’s sublime songwriting and singing, the album will feature a number of special guests who were early influences of the Kalamazoo-based artist.

Ellis & M.E: A serendipitous series of events brought Catherine Ellis, Alma Muxlow and Bob Elkins to the same acoustic jam at the Kalamazoo House in the spring of 2016. They were invited by John Thomas, author of Kalamazoo Gals and Bob’s longtime friend. Bob was soon adding his signature guitar licks to Catherine and Alma’s performances, and the blend was magical. They’ve been writing and playing music together ever since. Ellis & M.E.’s debut recording, Holding Up the Moon, was released in December 2021 and features both original works and cover tunes.
