Foundations of Sun Salutations at Kalamazoo Backyard Yogis
Sun Salutations—or Surya Namaskar—are often treated as a warm-up or automatic part of a yoga class, but few of us take the time to really understand their origins or how these sequences can be adapted to support our unique bodies.
In this 90-minute workshop, we’ll break down Sun Salutations A and B step by step. We’ll examine common alignment challenges, explore accessible modifications, and discuss how to move with more clarity, strength, and care. You’ll also gain insight into the history of these sequences—how they evolved in 20th-century India and why it’s important to honor their cultural roots.
Whether you’re new to yoga, returning after time away, or looking to enhance your teaching practice, this workshop offers a thoughtful way to engage with the flow. Expect a blend of movement, discussion, hands-on options, and time for questions.
This session involves weight-bearing movement (particularly through the wrists and knees) and will include both standing and floor-based transitions, with supportive variations offered. Please reach out if you have questions about whether this workshop meets your access needs or experience level.
By purchasing a ticket, you acknowledge that your participation is voluntary and that you assume full responsibility for your well-being during the workshop. In doing so, you agree to release the organizers and instructors from any liability for personal injury, accident, or harm that may occur in connection with your participation.
Kalamazoo Backyard Yogis exists to build community, foster well-being, and provide an equitable space for those most often left out of yoga. Celebrating all bodies. You are good.
