8:00 - Alex Sherk Quartet with Zachary Michalec, Desmond Lorenz, and Calvin Ohi

Alex Sherk is a Drummer from Ann Arbor, Michigan currently pursuing his degree at the University of Michigan; studying with drummer Nate Winn. Before this, he has pursed his undergraduate degree at Western Michigan University, during which he was able to perform with Brazilian jazz singer Luciana Souza and the New York Voices. He has also performed frequently in the Detroit area, playing at renowned venues such as as the Blue Llama Jazz Club, The Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, and Cliff Bell's. He has also toured in Europe playing in many historic places across the continent, including National Auditorium of Music in Madrid, as well as L'Auditori in Barcelona. The Alex Sherk Quartet features musicians from Ann Arbor including Calvin Ohi on guitar, Desmond Lorenz on bass, and Zachary Michalec on piano. This group draws influences from many different places stylistically, including the music of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Brian Blade and his fellowship, Ray Brown, and Bill Evans.

Bill Cessna is a jazz pianist and multi-instrumentalist committed to creating musical experiences that honor the jazz tradition and showcase the art of improvisation. A scholarship student at Columbia College Chicago beginning in 2009, he studied with Peter Saxe, Dennis Luxion, Donald Neale, and Sebastian Huydts before quickly becoming an in-demand sideman in Chicago’s vibrant music scene. 

In 2022, Bill completed his Master’s degree in Jazz Piano from Western Michigan University studying with Matthew Fries. He now performs extensively throughout the Midwest as a sideman and band leader.  He leads the Bill Cessna Trio — releasing Background Music(2022) and Billy Boy (2024) — and continues to collaborate across genres. In recent years, Bill has also launched multiple new projects exploring electronic and vocal music alongside his jazz work.
